One of the many advantages of registering with an online community is that every member gets emails detailing schedules of events well ahead of time so proper arrangements can be made for attending. You could also get early registration discounts.

Many Chicago speed dating services post an ad in the local newspaper announcing an event, and inviting all singles to attend. These events have no memberships and offer no discounts. You may a flat fee, which could include a drink at the bar or restaurant where the event is being held.

The organizers do go out of their way to get together people of similar age or interests, but this not guarantees 100% that you will find a mate. The success of the speed dating services depends on the honesty of the participants. There is no point putting on an act because it would be very difficult to keep up the act during further dates with the person who found you interesting.
